Why should I get an EV charger installed at home?

Optional scheduled night charge time between midnight and 5 a.m. You do not have to go anywhere else to charge your car if you commute. Who has time for that?

What is the benefit of Electric Car?

What are the different charging speed and what do they mean?

Trickle Charging

This is the slowest type of charging available. A trickle charge is best for long overnight charges at home via standard three pin plug, which isn’t recommended compared to other specifically designed electric car chargers. The 3-pin charger is tremendously slow. You'll get up to 8 miles of range per hour and take at least 18 hours for batteries over 42kWh (which most batteries are in 2022).

Slow Charging

This is a slightly more convenient option for home charging, as this does allow both top ups and long overnight charging with a specifically designed electric vehicle charger. These chargers are dedicated EV chargers, however their charging rate up to 3.5kWh which is half the size to the common Fast Chargers.

Fast Charging

This is ideal for top up charging and can generally provide up to 30 miles of range per hour of charging. It can also provide a full charge in just a few hours. Fast chargers are ideal for keeping your vehicle topped up with charge, whilst you’re out and about. Top EV Charger only sells and install Domestic/Commercial (3phase) EV chargers only.

Rapid Charging

Rapid charging refers to vehicles or chargers that are capable of charging from 43kW to 150kW. They are not available in domestic properties and are usually located at service stations, cities, and supermarkets, although rapid chargers at fuel stations are expected to become commonplace.

Ultra-Rapid or Hyper Charging

These are the fastest public chargers in the world. Their charging capabilities are 150 kWh & 350 kWh. There are around 20 sites exists with 350 kWh charging capability in the UK and only a handful of cars are capable of charging at that rate. So, do not worry if there is any around you.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

The length of time it will take to fully charge your electric car will depend on a number of factors, including the size of battery, charging point capability and the current battery level. So, installing a desired new home charging point (7.2-7.5 kWh) does mean faster charging time and more safety features compared with a regular three pin socket. Depending on the electric vehicle you have purchased you can fully charge your EV on average with a 7.2 kW charger between 3-4 hours (a night).

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 cables?

Type 1

This connector has five pins and features a clip. These connectors are generally found on cars made by Asian manufacturers such as Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan etc.

Type 2

This is a seven-pin plug with a flat edge, which is generally found on most American and European vehicles such as Volvo, Tesla, BMW and many more. Type 2 chargers are rapidly becoming the most widely used in the industry.

How long will my battery last?

Most electric cars come with long battery warranties, with the manufacturers guaranteeing the battery for 100,000 miles but generally speaking 8 – 10 years.

Can I charge my EV in the rain?

Absolutely! All our chargers on our websites are top brands and completely weatherproof, so they are suitable for use outdoors. The power only starts flowing once the charger within the vehicle and EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment or charger) communicate with each other.

How long can an electric car sit without a charge?

In a climate-controlled environment (garage attached to property), an electric car starting at 90% can sit for 6 months without charging, as long as it is in a power-saving mode. However, in cold climates, this is heavily reduced.

Are the Chargers the same for all electric cars?

Generally speaking, electric car chargers are universal. According to Car and Driver, all EV cars use the same standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 charging, which are also the two most commonly found EV chargers.
